چکیده
The rest-frame UV-to-optical flux ratio, which characterizes the "UV upturn" phenomenon, is potentially the most sensitive tracer of age in elliptical galaxies; models predict that it may change by orders of magnitude over the course of a few gigayears. In order to trace the evolution of the UV upturn as a function of redshift, we have used the far-UV camera on the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph to image the galaxy cluster CL 0016+16 at z=0.55. Our 25"x25" field includes four bright elliptical galaxies, spectroscopically confirmed to be passively evolving cluster members. The weak UV emission from the galaxies in our image demonstrates that the UV upturn is weaker at a look-back time approximately 5.6 Gyr earlier than our own, as compared to measurements of the UV upturn in cluster E and S0 galaxies at z=0 and z=0.375. These images are the first with sufficient depth to demonstrate the fading of the UV upturn expected at moderate redshifts. We discuss these observations and the implications for the formation history of galaxies.

متن کاملProto–Galactic Starbursts at High Redshift
We have computed the evolving ultraviolet-millimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by proto-galactic starbursts at high redshift, incorporating the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium in a consistent manner. Dust extinction is calculated in a novel way, that is not based on empirical calibrations of extinction curves, but rather on the lifetime of molecular clouds which ...
متن کاملUV Emission from Elliptical Galaxies Near and Far
The far-ultraviolet is the most rapidly evolving portion of the spectrum in both very young galaxies and very old galaxies. The “UV upturn” in the spectra of elliptical galaxies shortward of 2000Å offers a promising probe of the ages and chemical evolution of very old galaxies. In early-type non-active galaxies with the bluest 1550 − V colors, the bulk of the emission arises from Extreme Horizo...
متن کاملThe Absence of Passively Evolving Ellipticals in Deep Optical and Near-Infrared Surveys
The traditional view of elliptical galaxies has been that they formed in a single, rapid burst of star formation at high redshift, and have evolved quiescently since that time. In opposition to this traditional view is evidence that at least some elliptical galaxies have formed from the merger of two disk galaxies. What has not been clear is which process is the dominant formation mechanism for...
متن کاملDetectability of High Redshift Ellipticals in the Hubble Deep Field
The ultraviolet dropout technique, when applied to the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), has detected relatively few intensively star-forming galaxies at redshifts z > 2.5. This has been interpreted to imply a low space density of elliptical galaxies at high z, possibly due to a late (z < 2.5) epoch of formation, and contrary to what is deduced from the properties of present-day ellipticals. Alternative...
